Breast Surgery To Correct Breast Asymmetry

2010-09-22 13:36:00

Breast size in one individual can vary up to one whole cup size. Breast augmentation to address breast symmetry can provide an aesthetic balance and boost patients' self-confidence!

A recent study conducted by the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) found that breast augmentation and breast reduction were in the top five procedures performed for women in 2009. What the study does not address however, is the number of procedures performed to correct breast asymmetry. Breasts that are two different sizes can often have a significant impact on a woman’s self-esteem and quality of life; however, Dr. Robert Rothfield, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Ft. Lauderdale, says there are a number of plastic surgery procedures that can address the condition and give the breasts a more balanced aesthetic.

Breast asymmetry is a common condition that naturally occurs in all women. Although, for a lot of women, the differences between the breasts are small enough to escape notice, some women experience a more pronounced dissimilarity between the size and shape of their breasts. Dr. Rothfield says the differences are often so minor, the patient may not even be aware of them. However, he also notes that in extreme cases, asymmetry can be very noticeable and ultimately affect his patients’ self-confidence. Dr. Rothfield says a number of procedures are available that can address breast asymmetry, such as breast augmentation in Ft. Lauderdale. The procedure uses breast implants to add volume to the breasts, and can be useful in providing a better aesthetic match between both breasts. Dr. Rothfield says, although the surgery can effectively correct asymmetrical differences in the breasts, it should only be performed in women who are of an age that ensures the full development of the breasts is complete. He says the physical and psychological maturity of each patient is an important factor that needs to be considered, adding that asymmetrical breast surgery typically is not performed until at least age 18.

Dr. Rothfield says the initial breast asymmetry consultation with patients will determine whether they would benefit from a breast augmentation, breast lift in Ft. Lauderdale, or other breast surgery procedures. He says once the degree of asymmetry is addressed in the initial evaluation, he will help his patients formulate realistic expectations and talk with them about the variety of options available, including what may be best for their needs. He also notes that as with any medical procedure, risks associated with anesthesia and surgery exist and will be addressed.Throughout the process of correcting breast asymmetry, Dr. Rothfield stresses that some degree of asymmetry is universal: “While the goal of surgery is to make the breasts as symmetrical as possible, which can be achieved to a great extent, it is important to understand that the breasts will never be exactly the same.” However, Dr. Rothfield says that procedures to address breast asymmetry can go a long way in bringing the breasts into a better balance and making signs of asymmetry virtually unnoticeable.
