IPL Photo Facial Rejuvenation: the New Era In the War on Aging in Fort Lauderdale
Will Richardson, MD, PA Fort Lauderdale, FL
"Growing old gracefully" is now truly an adage from the past. Dermatologists now have the capability to reverse the signs of aging using a variety of techniques. Considering aged skin, several changes occur: decreased collagen in the dermis (remember the scaffold work of the skin), increase laxity of tissue resulting in facial sagging, and discoloration of the skin with brown age spots (formerly known as "liver spots"). Earlier technology involved solely the use of light based systems requiring the use of large amounts of light energy to achieve these results. The disadvantage to this technology, having worked with it in the past extensively, was that you needed to use excessive amounts of light energy which limited the application to lighter colored skin only. Undesirable side effects of burning and blistering of the outer surface of the skin frequently occured when too much light was used. This is not the desired outcome of any Photorejuvenation procedure. Photorejuvenation, when done properly, should involve no downtime at all. Through the use of various wavelengths of light, unlike lasers which only utilize one wavelength of light targeting one aspect of aging skin, we are able to target various pigments in the skin (dilated vessels, brown discoloration) and combined with resultant heating of aged collagen, we are able to replenish the skin with new more youthful appearing collagen and remove those unwanted age spots. Fotofacial Rejuvenation refers to a specific technique utilizing combined radiofrequency and intense pulsed light to restore youthful complexions. Fotofacials allow for the use of less light energy, which means less risk of burning and blister formation. Currently, there is only one system on the market which affords this technique offered through Syneron Medical Systems, known as elos technology. Photofacial, or Fotofacial rejuvenation, has revolutionized antiaging medicine by accomplishing outcomes formerly achieved after weeks of pain and disfigurement. Talk with your Dermatologist today about whether you would benefit from Photofacial, or Fotofacial rejuvenation. Educate and empower yourself realizing that when done properly, these techniques should have no downtime.
